MEM 502 - Functional Materials Properties and Characterisation

Indicative contents

The following topics will be covered, with approximately equal amounts of time spent on each:

  • Survey of materials central to microengineering and nanotechnology.
  • Metals, semiconductors and insulators; Semiconductors and their uses (Si, III-V, II-VI), Silicon as a mechanical material.
  • Polymeric materials;
  • Functional Ceramics: dielectrics, Piezoelectrics, Pyroelectrics, Ferroelectrics, electro-optics.
  • Magnetic & magnetostrictive materials, Giant & colossal magneto-resistance Materials,
  • Optical transition materials (e.g. photochromics, thermochromics),
  • Shape memory materials;
  • Mechanical properties, adhesion and stiction, stress in thin films, elastic and inelastic behaviour, mechanical failure mechanisms.
  • Specific examples of MEMS applications using functional materials (e.g. thermal imaging arrays, piezoelectric sensors, ultrasonic motors).
